Get to know the owner and Fortune Green Legal Practice Director - Linda Felton

Linda established Fortune Green Legal Practice in 2011 after working in-house in the public sector, where she supported planning officers and local councillors, including advising during planning committee meetings.

Before she qualified as a solicitor in 2006, she did a degree in languages and lived in both Germany and Sweden. She has also worked in higher education teaching English for academic purposes.

“I really enjoy working with clients. It is very satisfying to listen to the issues that clients have and to work with them to resolve their sometimes complex planning-related challenges. It is great to see the progress as they get closer to their goals. My work requires a blend of problem-solving and logical analysis, empathy, and an understanding of clients’ expectations.

I am deeply motivated by the intellectual challenge that comes with my work, finding satisfaction in resolving problems. I find supporting people as they navigate through their issues very rewarding. Town and country planning law, with all its complexity (good and bad), presents a unique challenge. I enjoy keeping up with the latest developments in the field, and I am constantly learning.

Growing up, I actually wanted to be a lawyer. There were no lawyers in my family, so it was only later in life that I qualified and achieved this ambition. My interest in languages and learning led me to work initially as a translator and an English language teacher. I believe that qualifying as a lawyer later in life has made me a better solicitor because I bring a lot of life experience to my work with clients.

My friends would describe me as someone who listens with empathy. They see me as honest and direct, yet always with a sense of humour. Loyalty, focus, determination, authenticity, and being down-to-earth are traits they often attribute to me, alongside being courteous, polite, well-mannered, and open-minded. I am the go-to party and event organiser for my friends.”

Giving Back

Every year since Fortune Green Legal Practice was established, I sign up for the mentoring programme at City, University of London, which was where I studied to be a solicitor. The act of supporting people who are still learning their skills and developing career aspirations can be more significant than it seems at first.

For a person who is still preparing for their career, the insight that I might take for granted from my working life can prove valuable, so taking the time to reflect on this together can be very important – often for both of us. The experience is also rewarding, and I am pleased to say that I have met many amazing people who have become very successful in their own professional lives.

Mentoring students is a small way of giving up some time to “give back” to the university that helped me set out on my career, but it is actually a great pleasure, too. The introduction to the latest student is something I look forward to every year
